World Heritage Day

World heritage is a the wealth of humankind. Protecting and preserving the world heritage is the duty of each human being. In order to increase public awareness about the cultural heritage, their vulnerabilities and their conservation efforts, World Heritage Day is celebrated on April 18 every year. World Heritage Day provides an unique opportunity to strengthen the perception of citizens towards their cultural heritage.

World Heritage Day was originally known as “International Day for Monuments and Sites”. The idea of was first suggested on April 18, 1982 at a symposium organised by ICOMOS in Tunisia. Next year, the UNESCO General Conference passed a resolution to recommend member states to celebrate April 18 of each year as the “International Monuments and Sites Day”.

Suggestions for celebrating World Heritage Day:

  • Visits to monuments and sites, and restoration works.
  • Publishing relevant articles in newspapers and magazines and broadcast on television and radio.
  • Conferences and interviews with local and foreign experts and personalities.
  • Discussions in public places such as city halls, cultural centres, libraries etc.
  • Awarding prizes to organisations or persons involved in conservation and promotion of cultural heritage.
  • Publication of books, post-cards, stamps, posters etc.
  • Exhibitions of photographs, paintings etc.

World Heritage Day in India:

Article 51(A) of the Constitution of India requires every citizen to value and preserve the rich heritage of our composite culture. But the status of heritage conservation and management is still poor in India. Many of our cultural heritage sites are still neglected and historical monuments are turning into ruins. Along with many other countries, India also celebrates World Heritage Day. So, it is a good opportunity to raise public awareness about the richness and diversity of our natural and cultural heritage and also emphasize the need of their protection and conservation.
