The Assam Primary Education Act, 1947

Assam Primary Education Act, 1947 was passed by Provincial Legislative Assembly of Assam in 1947. It replaced the earlier Act of 1926. The Act made primary education universal, compulsory and free. Assam Primary Education Act, 1947 also provided for creation of Sub-divisional school boards.

So, the Assam Primary Education Act, 1926 got repealed by Assam Primary Education Act, 1947. This new act wanted to make primary education compulsory and universal in the state. Under the Act, school boards were created at sub-divisional level. These boards were made responsible for ensuring free and compulsory primary education.

But just like it’s predecessor, the Assam Primary Education Act, 1947 also failed. It failed to ensure free and compulsory primary education. But on the positive side, this Act opened the doors for primary education in Assam.
