Parvati Prasad Barua

Parvati Prasad Barua (1904 – 1964) was an Assamese poet, playwright and film director. He is popularly knows as Geetikobi (the lyrical poet) in Assam. Barua was also one of the pioneers of Assamese film industry.

Parvati Prasad BaruaParvati Prasad Barua was born on August 19, 1904 in Sibsagar, Assam. His father was Rai Sahib Radhika Prasad Baruva and mother was Himala Devi. His schooling started at Phuleswari School in Sibsagar. In 1921, he matriculated from Government High School, Sibsagar. During his high school days, Parvati Prasad Barua started a hand-written magazine named Jupitora (cluster of stars). After matriculation, he went to Cotton College in Guwahati and successfully passed Intermediate in Science (I.Sc.) from there. At Cotton College, he was the editor of college magazine Milan. After I.Sc., Barua went to Calcutta and graduated from Scottish Church College.

In 1941, Barua directed Assamese film Rupohi. He also composed music for the film and acted in the role of Ananda Mahanta.
