Sarbananda Sonowal is the current Chief Minister of Assam. Born on 31 October 1962, Sarbananda Sonowal is an Indian politician who has served as the president of All Assam Students Union (AASU) from 1992 to 1999. Sonowal started his political career as a member of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and got elected as Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Moran constituency in 2001. Later in 2004, he got elected as a Member of Lok Sabha from Dibrugarh constituency of Assam. In 2011, Sonowal joined Bharatiya Janaya Party (BJP). In 2014, he got elected as a Member of Parliament from Lakhimpur Constituency and served as the Minister of State (Independent Charges) for Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Youth Affairs and Sports. Later he also served as Minister of State (Independent Charges) for Youth Affairs and Sports. In 2016 Assam Assembly Election, Sonowal got elected from Majuli Constituency in Assam and sworn-in as the first BJP Chief Minister of Assam.
