Bhugeswar Baruah was the first Assamese to play in the Asiam Games or Asiad. Bhugeswar Barua represented Indian in the 1966 Bangkok Asian Games. He took part in the 800 metres track running event and won the Gold medal. His timing was 1:49.4. Indian Govt honored him with Arjun Award. Today Assam celebrates the Birthday of Bhugeswar Barua as the Abhiruchi Sports Day.
