Nilamani Phukan was the first Assamese recipient of Sahitya Akademi Fellowship. Nilamoni Phukan was a writer, poet and freedom fighter. He popularly called as Bagmibor in Assamese literary circle. Nilamoni Phukan became a honorary Sahitya Akademi Fellow in the year 1973. The Sahitya Akademi Fellowship is the highest honour conferred by the Sahitya Akademi. This honour is reserved for “the immortals of literature” and is given to only twenty-one writers at any given time.
