Hemkosh was the first etymological dictionary in Assamese language. It was written (compiled) by Hemchandra Barua. Hemkosh was based on Sanskrit spellings and was first published in the year 1900. Initially it contained 22, 346 words. Hemkosh is still in publication and is considered as the standard reference of the Assamese language.
Here we must add that first Assamese dictionary was Miles Bronson’s “A Dictionary in Assamese and English”.
