The Chief Commissionership of Assam was introduced in the year 1874. After the Yandaboo treaty of 1826, Assam went to the hands of British. They included Assam in the province of Bengal. In 1874, Assam was separated from the Lieutenant-Governorship of Bengal. On February 7, 1874, Assam was upgraded to a Chief Commissioner’s Province under Richard Harte Keatinge.
