Morigaon District, Assam

Morigaon is an administrative district in the state of Assam, India. The district occupies an area of about 1,450 square km and has a population of 957,853 (2011 census). The district is bounded by Brahmaputra river on the North; Karbi Anglong district on the South; Nagaon District on the East and Kamrup District on the West. The district headquarters of Morigaon are located at Morigaon. The district also has an ancient place of occult, called Mayang.

History:

The history of Morigaon is obscure. One of it’s famous ruler was Arimatta. But his history is shrouded in mystery. After Arimattas’s death, Jongalbalahu, his son ruled over the region. Jongalbalahu was killed by the Kacharis with a bamboo spear near Kajalimukh. But there are also some mysteries in this episode. According to legend, Jongalbalahu had escaped his pursuers and submerged himself in Kolong river. He emerge at Raha to quench his thirst and again dived here to emerge at Jagi. From this incident legend the names of the present day Raha and Jagi were derived. 

During the days of Lachit Borphukan, two princes from Darrang named Ram Singh and Bhimsingh crossed the Brahmaputra in search of plain land to settle down. After some time, Ram Singh left for his home and Bhim Singh settled down near Mori Beel. This is how the place came to known as Morigaon.

People:

The population of Morigaon district of Assam is 957,853 (as per 2011 India Census). The population density in the district is 618 persons per square km and one decade (2001-2011) population growth rate is 23.39%. The sex ratio in the district is 974 females for every 1000 males. Morigaon has a literacy rate of 69.37%.

Wildlife:

There are three Reserved forests in Morigaon district: Sunaikuchi, Khulahat, and Bura Mayong. There is also one wildlife Sanctuary named Pobitora, which is famous for the Indian one horned Rhinoceros.
