Padmanath Gohain Baruah

Padmanath Gohain Baruah (1871 – 1946) is a prominent figure in Assamese literature world. He was a poet, novelist, dramatist and an excellent writer. He was the first president of Asam Sahitya Sabha. Padmanath Gohain Baruah is also referred to as the Pitamaha (Great Grandfather) of Assamese literature.

Brief Biography:

Padmanath Gohain Baruah PhotoPadmanath Gohain Barua was born in North Lakhimpur on October 24, 1871. His schooling started from a Bengali school near his birthplace. Later he went to Kolkata for higher education. While in Calcutta, Barua became an active member of Assamese organization – Asomiya Bhasar Unnati Sadhini Sabha and also started Assamese monthly Bijulee (with  Krishnaprasad Duwara).

He wrote Bhanumati in 1890. It was the first Assamese language novel. In 1901, Barua published an Assamese weekly called Asom Banti from Tezpur. Later in 1906, Padmanath Gohain Baruah published a monthly magazine called Usha. Both Asom Banti and Usha played great role in uplifting of Assamese language and literature. Padmanath Gohain Baruah died on April 7, 1946.
