Nabin Chandra Bordoloi

Nabin Chandra Bordoloi (1875 – 1936) was a writer, freedom fighter and political leader from Assam state of India. He is popularly known as Karmabir or Karmaveer Nabin Chandra Bordoloi.

Biography:

Nabin Chandra Bordoloi was born on October 30, 1875 at North Guwahati, Assam. His father Madhab chandra Bordoloi was an Extra Assistant Commissioner under the Government of Assam. He passed the Entrance Examination from the Government High School, Tezpur. Then he went to Calcutta and passed the B.A. Examination from the Presidency College in 1896. Nabin Chandra Bordoloi became a law graduate in 1899.

Returning to Assam, Nabin Chandra Bardoloi took active interest in public affairs. He was involved in the establishment of the Earle Law College at Guwahati in 1913. He served as a lecturer in that College for some time. In 1919 Nabin Chandra Bardoloi along with Prasanna Kumar Baruah went to England and placed before the joint parliamentary committee for inclusion of Assam’s case in the Montague-Chelmsford Reforms. In 1920 Nabin Chandra Bardoloi attended the Nagpur session of the Indian National Congress. After the Jaliwanwala Bagh tragedy, Bordoloi got involved in the Indian freedom struggle. He gave up his law practice and took part in the Non-cooperation Movement.

In 1921, Nabin Chandra Bordoloi was arrested and sent to prison for eighteen months. In 1929 he was arrested again and jailed for the second time. In 1934 Nabin Chandra Bordoloi was elected to the Indian Legislative Assembly. He was the spokesman of the opposition. His tireless activities earned for him the title Karmabir (which means hero of action). Nabin Chandra Bordoloi passed away in 1936.
