Maniram Dewan

Born on 17th April, 1806, Maniram Dutta Baruah, popularly known as Maniram Dewan was undoubtedly the greatest Assamese of the first half of the 19th century. He was first Assamese Tea planter. He established tea gardens at Chinamara in Jorhat and at Singlou in Sibsagar district. He also played an active role in the freedom movement of Assam.

Maniram Dewan was hanged to death by the British Court of Law in 1858 at Jorhat, for taking part in Sepoy Mutiny and conspiring against the British Government. His role in the freedom movement against the British will be remembered for ages to come.

  • OK. Well, Dutiram Barua was married to a sister of Maniram Dewan and they had 2 sons: Priyalal and Lakshmilal. I am a direct decendnt. I just want to know which 2 years Dutiram Barua was sent to the Andamans by the Raj. Thanks!

    I’m very, very proud of my great great grandfather (Maniram Dewan) for all his endeavours in bringing Independence for our country, India. I hope, I’m making his soul proud too, today by the way, I am leading my life. It is surely inspired by him.
