Hem Barua

Hem Barua (1915 – 1977) was a prominent Assamese poet, writer and politician. He was one of the pioneers of modern Assamese poetry. He wrote popular Assamese songs like He was three times parliamentarian and was also the president of Asam Sahitya Sabha’s Dhubri session in 1972.

Biography:

Hem Barua was born on April 22, 1915 in Tezpur, Assam. After finishing schooling he went to Calcutta and obtained M.A. degree from Calcutta University. In 1941, he joined Jorhat’s J.B. College as Assamese and English lecturer. During Quit India Movement, Hem Barua got imprisoned. After release from jail, he joined B. Barua College in Guwahati and retired from there as Principal.

Hem Barua was a member of Congress party, which he left in 1948 to become a member of the Praja Socialist party. He got elected to Lok Sabha from Guwahati in 1957. Hem Barua was elected to Lok Sabha two more times – in 1962 from Guwahati and in 1967 from Mangaldoi. In 1971, he became the editor of Assam Express – an English daily from Assam. In 1972, Hem Barua became the president of annual Dhubri session of Asam Sahitya Sabha.

Hem Barua died in 1977.

    We the Assamese always remember Hem Baruah as a hero elected from Assam, for his activities and rule in Lok Sabha during Nehru era.
