Ganesh Gogoi

Ganesh Gogoi (1907 – 1938) was a great romantic poet from Assam. He is famous for Papori (meaning petals in English), an Assamese poem expressing the agony of failure in love. Assamese people call him Papori kobi.

Biography:

Ganesh Gogoi was born on December 28, 1908 in Jorhat, Assam. His schooling started in Jorhat. He passed matriculation from Jorhat Government High School. In 1926, Ganesh Gogoi got admitted in Cotton College, Guwahati. But after one yea, he left for Calcutta and got enrolled in the Ripon College there. Later he got admitted to Kashi Hindu University (Banaras Hindu University) but didn’t complete Intermediate in Arts.

Ganesh Gogoi had his own timber business. In 1929, he wrote two full-length dramas – Sakunir pratishodh and Kashmir Kumari. In year 1935, he wrote is famous poem – Papori. He also wrote several popular short plays. Ganesh Gogoi died of tuberculosis on August 21, 1938. Yes, it was an early dead and he was just 30 years old.
