Debendra Nath Acharya

Debendranath Acharya (1937 – 1981) was an engineer and notable novelist from Assam. He was the Principal of the Assam Engineering College. He wrote popular Assamese novels like Kalpurush, Anya Jug Anya Purush and Jangam.

Biography:

Debendra Nath Acharya was born in 1937 at Garakhiya Dol, Jorhat. After earning B.Tech degree from IIT, Kharagpur, Acharya went to England for higher studies. He earned Master’s Degree in Engineering from London University and a Diploma from Imperial College, London. Returning home, Acharya started his career as a lecturer in Assam Engineering College, Guwahati. Later he became the General Manager of Assam Gas Company and served in the same position till his death.

In 1970, he wrote Assamese language novel – Anya Yug Anya Purus. The novel depicts the change in rural social life in context of the modern civilization. His other works include historical novel Kalpurush and Jangam. Kalpurush won him Assam Publication Board award in 1978. Debendra Nath Acharya passed away in 1981. He was posthumously awarded the Sahitya Akademi award in 1984 (for his novel Jangam).
