Debakanta Barua

Debakanta Barua (1914 – 1996) was an eminent politician and poet from Assam. He was the president of the Indian National Congress. He also served as the Governor of Bihar. Barua is well known for his Assamese poetry collection – Sagar Dekhisa.

Biography:

Debakanta Barua was born on February 22, 1914 in Nagaon, Assam. He was the elder brother of famous Assamese poet Nabakanta Barua.

Barua was a successful politician. He was a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) and served as the State Education Minister in Assam. He was also Member of Parliament (MP) and a Central Minister. Barua served as the Governor of the Bihar state of India from 1971 to 1973. Then he became the President of Indian Nation Congress during 1975. He remained in the position till 1977 (yes during the period of emergency). Devakanta Barua was loyal to Indira Gandhi is often remembered for his line: “Indira is India and India is Indira”.

Barua wrote a famous poetry book in Assamese language. It was title Sagar Dekhisa. He also edited a daily news paper. Debakanta Barua passed away on January 28, 1996.
