Chandra Kumar Agarwala

Chandra Kumar Agarwala (1867 – 1938) was an eminent poet, writer and journalist from Assam, India. He is known as ‘Pratimar Khonikar’ in the Assamese literary circle. He was the first editor of Jonaki magazine and is considered as one of the pioneers of Jonaki Era in Assamese literature. Chandra Kumar Agarwala was the uncle of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala.

Brief Biography:

Chandra Kumar Agarwala PhotoChandra Kumar Agarwala was born on November 28, 1867 in Gohpur of Sonitpur district, Assam, India. His school life started at Tezpur. After finishing schooling from Tezpur Government High School, Agarwala went to Kolkata and got enrolled in the Presidency College. He successfully completed FA from the college. He also enrolled for BA but didn’t completed it.

Agarwala was the founder member of Asamiya Bhasar Unnati Sadhini Sabha (Assamese Language Developing Society), which was a literary organization formed by few talented Assamese students studying in Calcutta. In 1889, the Asamiya Bhasar Unnati Sadhini Sabha started their mouthpiece – Assamese monthly Jonaki. Chandra Kumar Agarwala was the editor of the Jonaki.

Returning to Assam, Chandra Kumar Agarwala started Assamese weekly Asamiya in 1918. The Asamiya was published from Dibrugarh. But soon he shifted to Guwahati. Chandra Kumar Agarwala passed away on March 2, 1938.
