Bhattadeva

Bhattadeva (1558-1638) or Baikunthanatha Bhagavata Bhattacharya was a Brahmin scholar from Assam. He is widely acknowledged as the father of Assamese prose. Bhattadeva is best known for his two great works: Katha Bhagavat and Katha Gita.

Biography:

Bhattadeva was born on January, 1558 in Bheragoan, Barpeta, Kamrup. His parents were Chandra Bharati and Tara Devi. Bhattadev was a disciple of Damodaradeva and succeeded him as the head of Patbausi satra at Barpeta. He established the Vyasakuchi sattra some time later where he died.
Works:

Bhattadeva began translating the Sanskrit Bhagavata under the direction of Damodaradeva. After completing the Bhagavata and the Gita, he rendered the Bhaktiratnavali into elegant Assamese prose. Another work of Buattadev is Bhakti-Viveka.
