Ananda Ram Barua

Ananda Ram Barua (1850 – 1889) or Anandoram Barooah was a world reputed Sanskrit scholar. He was the first Assamese to have passed the coveted Indian Civil Service (ICS) examination. He was also the first Graduate from Assam.

He studied B.A. at Presidency College, Kolkata and became the first Assamese Graduate. He obtained State Scholarship and went to England for further studies in Law. Barua was also awarded with Gilchrist Scholarship. He passed ICS in the the year 1870. He was the first Assamese and fifth Indian to clear the examination. Ananda Ram Barua became the first Indian to serve as District Magistrate in East Bengal.
