Gauhati University was established in the year 1948 under the Gauhati University Act,1947 (Assam Act XVI of 1947). It is affiliated to the association of Indian Universities, which was affiliation of Commonwealth Universities. It is the oldest and largest University of the North Eastern Region. At present Gauhati University has 183 affiliated colleges offering under-graduate and post-graduate courses in Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Engineering and Medicine.

The Gauhati University is located at Jalukbari within the Guwahati city area. The campus area has been developed into a small township now known as Gopinath Bardoloi Nagar. It has now about 5000 population including 1500 students residing in the hostels. Besides residential quarters of teachers, officers and employees of the University, there are 20 halls of residence for University students. The necessary civic amenities such as health services, water supply, street lighting, internal roads, guest house-cum-club, post and telegraph office, a branch of State Bank of India, canteens, a market, parks, playgrounds, auditorium etc are provided in the campus.
Gauhati University is situated at about 10 km. from Borjhar airport. It’s distance from Kamakhya railway station is about 5 km., while the Guwahati Railway station is just 10 km. away. Dispur, the capital complex of Assam is 22 km away from Gauhati University.
