Dima Hasao District, Assam

Dima Hasao, which was earlier known as North Cachar Hills (NC Hills) is a district in Assam. Dima Hasao district is now an autonomous district and it’s original name NC Hills was changed on March 30, 2010. The district occupies an area of 4,888 square km. The NC Hills is a hills district with undulating hills, rapid stream, waterfalls and valleys. The district shares boundaries with Karbi Anglong and Nagaon district on North; Manipur and Nagaland on East; Cachar district on South; and Meghalaya and Karbi Anglong on West. Sub-divisions of the district are Haflong and Maibang. The district headquarters are located at Haflong.

People:

Major tribes living in the NC Hills are Dimasas, Hmars, Zeme Nagas and Kukis. Other small ethnic groups in the district include Biate, Hrangkhol, Mikir, Khasi, Lushai, Garo, Hajong, Chakma etc. Dima Hasao is one of the least populous districts in India. The 2011 India census found that the district has a population of 213,529, which translates into a population density of just 44 persons per square km area. The sex ratio in the hill district is 931 females against each 1000 males. The literacy rate in Dima Hasao is 78.99%.

Connectivity:

The distance to Dima Hasao from Guwahati, the capital city of Assam is about 368km. It can be reached via road and railway. Regular bus services operates from and to Guwahati and Nagaon. Nearest railway station is Haflong. The district has no airports. For air connectivity, one has to go to either Silchar or Guwahati.

  • Haflong: District HQ and hill station.
  • Jatinga: Jatinga is known for bird suicide mystery.
  • Maibang: Stone house and temple of Kachari king.
  • Panimoor: Beautiful waterfall.
