Hiren Bhattacharyya

Hiren Bhattacharyya (1932 -2012) was one of the most prominent Assamese poets of all time. Popularly known as ‘Hiruda’, Hiren Bhattacharyya started writing since early sixties. His unique style of poetry has a lyrical flow. Hiruda received several awards including Sahitya Akademi Award and Assam Valley Literary Award.

Brief Biography:

Hiren Bhattacharyya PhotoHiren Bhattacharyya was born on July 28, 1932 in Jorhat, Assam, India. His father was Tirthanath Bhattacharyya and mother was Snehalata Bhattacharyya. Hiruda started writing poetry in 1960s. His earlier works appeared on Assamese journals. He also works as editor of several newspapers and magazines. Gradually his work started taking the shape of books. His early poetry books include Rudro Kamona, Kobitar Rod and Mor Desh aru Mor Premor Kobita. Hiren Bhattacharyya passed away on July 4, 2012 in Guwahati, Assam. He was married to Parul Devi

Hiren Bhattacharyya received Sahitya Akademi Award in 1992. It was for his anthology of poems ‘Saichor Pathar Manuh’. And in the year 2000, Megor Sikhya Nyash awarded him with Asom Upotyoka Sahitya Bota (Assam Valley Literary Award). Other awards include Bishnu Rava Bota (1958), Rajaji Puroskar, (1984), Soviet Desh Neheru Bota (1987) and Baharatiya Bhasha Parishad Award (1993).
