Bishnu Prasad Rabha

Bishnu Prasad Rabha (1909-1969) was a legendary Assamese artist, poet, singer, composer, director and freedom fighter. He is popularly known as Kala Guru or Kolaguru in Assam.

Brief Biography:

Bishnu Rabh PhotoBishnu Prasad Rabha was born on 31 January 1909 in present day Dhaka, Bangladesh. His father was Sardar Bahadur Gopal Chandra Das. Rabha started his schooling from Dhaka. After his family shifted to Tezpur, Rabha got admitted in the Tezpur Government High School and passed matriculation examination from there. Then Bishnu Prasad Rabha went to Calcutta for higher education. He completed ISC from St. Paul’s Cathedral Mission College and studied B.Sc. in Ripon College (now Surendranath College) under the University of Calcutta. Bishnu Rabha was an active participant in Indian independence movement. In 1945, Rabha joined the Revolutionary Communist Party of India (RCPI).

Bishnu Rabha died on June 20, 1969.

Writer: Bano Kobang, Sunpahi, Mising Coneng, Axomiya Kristir Samuh Abhash, Atit Asom.

Music: Bishnu Rabha composed more than one hundred songs, which are now collectively known as Rabha Sangeet.

Director: Bishnu Rabha directed Assamese film Siraj (1948)

Actor: Bishnu Rabha performed several times in Ban Theater, Tezpur. He also played a role in Assamese movie Era Bator Sur (1956).
