Kokrajhar District, Assam

Kokrajhar is one of the 27 districts in Assam state of India. The district is located on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra and occupies an area of 3,169.22 square km. Kokrajhar shares it’s borders with Bhutan on North; Bongaigaon district on East; Dhubri district on South and Indian state of West Bengal on West. The district headquarters are located at Kokrajhar town. Kokrajhar is also the headquarter of the Bodoland Autonomous Council which was created in 1993.

Kokrajhar was originally a part of undivided Goalpara district. In 1957 Kokrajhar Sub-division was created by carving out the northern part of Dhubri Sub-division and some parts of Goalpara Sub-division. The Kokrajhar Sub-division was upgraded into full-fleged Kokrajhar district on July 1, 1983. But Kokrajhar lost some of it’s land when Bongaigaon district was created in 1989. The district now has two revenue sub-divisions: Kokrajhar and Gossaigaon Sub-divisions. But

Population of Kokrajhar district is 886,999 (as per 2011 census) with a population density of 280 inhabitants per square km area. The sex ratio in the district is 958 females per 1000 males. About 66.3% people in the district are literate (literacy rate). Bodo community comprises the majority of population in Kokrajhar district. But the district also has a sizeable population of Rajbongshi and Santhal community.

Connectivity:

Kokrajhar is well connected with other parts of the state and rest of India via road and railway. Both road and rail touches this district at Srirampur before they go in or out of Assam.

  • Onthai Gwlao: Located in Chandrapara near the bank of river Gwrang.
  • Mahamaya temple: Located on the border between Kokrajhar and Dhubri.

  • Thandwi Bineswar Brahma Memorial Park: Located in Bhatermary on the bank of River Gwrang.
