Jyoti Chitraban

The ‘Jyoti Chitraban’ or Jyoti Chitraban Film Studio is the only Film Studio in North-East India. It is located at Kahilipara, Guwahati and named after the famous son of Assam – Jyotiprasad Agarwala. Jyoti Chitraban is now formally known as Jyoti Chitraban Film and Television Institute, which offers various courses in sound, motion picture, film editing etc.

Jyotiprasad Agarwala was the First Assamese Film Producer. In 1935, he produced the First Assamese Film – Joymati. Then, his second venture was Indramalati. To produce his films, he made a temporary film studio at Bholaguri Tea Estate. He called the studio as ‘Chitraban’.

After the death of Jyotiprasad Agarwala, noted Assamese Singer Bhupen Hazarika demanded Government of Assam to establish a film studio in Guwahati. This demand was also supported by Bishnuprasad Rabha – the noted Singer, Dancer, Writer and Social Reformer of Assam. They also demanded that this studio must be in the memory of Jyotiprasad Agarwala. In response to the demand of these noted personalities, Government of Assam established the “Jyoti Chitraban Film Studio”, in 1961. It was the beginning of a new era in Assamese Film Industry.

The film studio is situated at Kahilipara, Guwahati and covers an area of 73 bigha. The studio is equipped with ultra modern floors, ultra modern trolley-volley-cum-crane, 16 mm movie camera, lights etc. Till now, more than 200 films have been released from Jyoti Chitraban. In 1999, the studio has been renamed as “Jyoti Chitraban Film and Television Institute”. This is the only film and television institute in entire North-east India. Now the institute offers some courses related to film and television.
