Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam
Dehing Patkai is an wildlife sanctuary with tropical wet evergreen rain forests. Located in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district of Assam, the Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of 111.19 square kms. It is a home of various rare wildlife species such as Clouded leopard, Hoolock gibbon, Tiger, Rhesus macaque, Pig-tailed macaque etc. Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary is also rich in rare wild orchids and bird species.
The Sanctuary is a part of the Dehing-Patkai Elephant Reserve. The World War II cemeteries and famous Stillwell Road is nearby to the sanctuary. The best time to visit Dehing Patkai is during September to March.
Wildlife in Dehing Patkai:
- Mammals: Clouded leopard, Leopard, Chinese pangolin, Flying fox, Slow loris, Stump-tailed macaque, Assamese macaque, Rhesus macaque, Capped langur, Hoolock gibbon, Himalayan black bear, Hog –badger, Tiger, Wild pig, Sambar, Barking deer, Gaur, Serow, Malayan giant squirrels, Porcupine, Pig-tailed macaque, Jungle cat, Leopard cat, Fishing cat, Marbled cat, etc.
- Birds: Lesser Adjutant Stork, White Winged Wood duck, Great Pied Hornbill, Beautiful Nuthatch, White-backed Vulture, Slender-billed Vulture, White cheeked Hill Partridge, Khaleej Pheasant, Grey Peacock-Pheasant, Rufus necked Hornbill, Wreathed Hornbill, Green Imperial Pigeon, Purple wood or Pale capped Pigeon, Black-browed Leaf Wabler, etc.
- Reptiles: Rock python, King cobra, Asian leaf turtle, Monitor Lizard etc.
How to reach?
The Sanctuary is close to Digboi, Duliajan and Margherita towns. All these towns are well connected with various parts of the state via road. The nearest airport is in Mohanbari, Dibrugarh. The distance from Mohanbari to Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary is about 80kms.
