Nameri National Park

Nestled at the foothills of Eastern Himalayas, Nameri National Park covers an area of 200 Sq. k.m.With river Jia Bhoroli bifurcating the park, it is the most scenic of all the national parks of Assam. Its in the eastern border of Assam in the valley and mountainous Arunachal Pradesh, Nameri is home to some of of the endangered species like white winged wood duck, Sloth Bear, Tiger Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Sambar, Gaur, Indian Wild Dog, four varieties of Hornbill and many other winged species.

The other reason Nameri is famous for, is the herds of elephants. The park have a high density of elephant population and due to lessening of forest cover, they sometimes invade human inhabited villages, which have attracted the attention of wildlife conservationists worldwide.

Jia Bhoroli river of Assam is famous for the Mahseer angling, since the time of British. This perennial river enters Assam in the plains, near Bhalukpung after swirling through the rugged mountains of Arunachal. Its is home of the Golden Mahseer- The Tiger of Indian rivers and a catch for any angler. In the National Park, only game angling (tag and release) is allowed during season from October to April.

35 km from Tezpur town, Nameri is the third National park of the State. Covering an area of 200 sq km, Nameri is the treasure house of many endangered species of wildlife like the White Winged Wood-Duck, Sloth Bear, Tiger, Leopard, Sambar, Elephant, Gaur, Indian wild Dog, four varieties of Hornbill and varieties of birds.

Flora
The floral wealth of the park is very significant. The Natural Forest species are like Bombax ceiba, Dalbergia sissoo, Sterculia villosa, Trewia nudiflora, Zizypphus jujuba, Litsaea polyantha, etc. Among the non aquatic grassland species the prominent are Phragmites karka, Arundo donax, Imperata cylindrical, Saccarum spp. etc. The aquatic grass/plants species are Andropogon spp., Ipomea reptans, Enhydra flushians, Nymphia spp., Wichornia spp. etc

Birds
Home to the White bellied heron and White Winged Duck the Nameri Tiger Reserve is also a fabulous bird watching destination. Lesser racket tailed Drongos, Beautiful Nuthatch, Grey headed Fishing Eagle, Jerdon’s Baza and many more extremely difficult species are to be expected.

Insects
Nameri being an aqua habitat along with moist deciduous forest is teeming with insect life. From butterflies and moths to the incredible variety of spiders and ants and termites Nameri is a treat for any entomologist.
