Karbi Anglong District, Assam

Karbi Anglong is one of the districts in Assam state of India. It is located in the central part of the state, between 25º 33′ N to 26º 35′ N Latitude and 92º 10′ to 93º 50′ E Longitude. The district covers an area of 10,434 square kilometres, which include various hills, dense tropical forests and flat plains. Karbi Anglong is bounded by Golaghat district in the East; Meghalaya & Morigaon district in the West; Nagaon & Golaghat district in the North and N.C. Hills district & Nagaland in the South.

As per 2011 census, Karbi Anglong district shelters a population of 965,280 with a population density of just 93 person per square km. The population of the district is predominantly tribal. The major tribal ethnic groups of Karbi Anglong include Karbis, Bodos, Kukis, Dimasas, Hmars, Garos, Rengma Nagas, Tiwas, Man (Tai Speaking’s). A large number of non-tribals also live in this hill region of Assam. Main spoken language in the district is Karbi. Dimasa language is also widely spoken in the area. Other languages spoken in Karbi Anglong include Bodo, Kuki, Assamese and Aiton. The literacy rate in the district is 73.52%.

  • Communication:

The district is well connected with other districts of Assam via road. On the north of Karbi Anglong is the NH-37 and on the east is NH-39. The N.F. railways passes through the district touching only a few points along the boundary. There is no airport in the district. Nearest airport is in Dimapur, Nagaland. The hot and humid Summer in Karbi Anglong lasts from June to August. Weather is pleasant in other months. The peak tourist season in the district is from October to March.
