Golaghat District, Assam
Golaghat is one of the 27 districts of Assam. It is located between 93° 16′ East to 94° 10′ East longitude and 25° 50′ North to 26° 47′ North latitude. The district has Brahmaputra river on North; Jorhat and Nagaland on East; Karbi Anglong and Nagaland on South; and Nagaon and Karbi Anglong on West. Golaghat district of Assam occupies an area of 3502 sq. km and lies 100 meters above sea level.
As per 2011 Indian census, Golaghat has a population of 1,058,674. It’s population density is 302 inhabitants per square kilometer. The sex ratio in this district is 961 females per 1000 males. Golaghat has a literacy rate of 78.31%. Hindus constitutes majority of the population.
History:
The name Golaghat originated from two words: ‘Gola’, meaning shop and ‘Ghat’, meaning the landing point of river ferry. The two words tells the story of shops established by ‘Marwari’ businessmen at the bank of river Dhansiri near present Golaghat town.
Ancient inscriptions dating back to 5th century says that there was an independent kingdom in Doyang – Dhansiri valley. In 16th century, the Doyang – Dhansiri valley came under the Ahom kingdom. After British took possession of Assam, Doyang – Dhansiri valley was included under the newly formed Golaghat subdivision of Sibsagar District in 1846. Later in 15th of August 1987, Golaghat was elevated to the position of a full-fledged district of Assam
Places to visit in Golaghat:
- Kaziranga National Park: The famous World Natural Heritage Site with largest population of great Indian one-horned Rhinoceros and many rare wildlife species.
- Garampani: A hot water spring inside the Nambar Reserve Forest.
- Deopahar Ruins: Ruins of an ancient temple with statues.
- Neghereting Shiva Mandir: A famous Shiva temple built by Ahom kings.
