Bongaigaon District, Assam

Bongaigaon is a district of Assam. The district occupies an area of 2,510 square km. Bongaigaon shares boundaries with Kokrajhar district on North-West; Barpeta district on East; and river brahmaputra on South. The district has three subdivisions: Bongaigaon, Bijni and North Salmara. The district headquarters of Bongaigaon are located at Bongaigaon town.

The Bongaigaon district was created in 1989 by curving out some areas of from the Goalpara and Kokrajhar district. In 2004, parts of Bongaigaon district went to newly formed Chirang district. This district of Assam is one of the most backward districts in Assam.

People:

According to India Census 2011, the population of Bongaigaon district is 732,639 with a population density of 425 persons per square km. The sex ratio in the district is 961 females for every 1000 males and literacy rate is 70.44%. Hindus constitutes majority of the population, followed by Muslims and Christians. Local communities in the district include Koch-Rajbongchies, Kocharies, Ravas, Garos, Yogis, Kalitas, Kayasthas etc.

Communication:

The Bongaigaon district of Assam is well connected by road and railway. NH-31, NH-31(B) and NH-31(C) passes through the district. There are many direct buses from Bongaigaon to capital city Guwahati and Siliguri in West Bengal. The nearest railway stations are Bongaigaon and New Bongaigaon. All major trains (Rajdhani Express, Kamrup Express, North East express, Trivundrum Express, Dadar Express, Saraighat Express, Brahmaputra mail etc) connecting Assam with other parts of India has their stoppage at these stations. There are some local trains too, which daily ply between Bongaigaon and Guwahati. The nearest International airport is in Borjhar near Guwahati.
