On January 27, planet Mars can be spotted closest, biggest and brightest from Earth. This is a good opportunity for stargazers to watch their favorite star with naked eyes! And on January 30, ”Mars Opposition” will occur, during which Mars and Sun are on directly opposite sides of Earth and Mars will be visible all through the night.Mars would be brightest beginning from January 27 till the end of March.
On Wednesday, Mars will pass within 61 million miles (98 million kilometers) of Earth. So, it would appear as warm yellow gold with a hint of red star like object for naked eye. And with a simple telescope one will be able to see the ice caps in the Northern tip of Mars.
During opposition, Mars and the sun are on directly opposite sides of Earth. An opposition can occur anywhere along planet Mars’ orbit. When it happens while the planet is closest to the sun (called "perihelic opposition"), Mars is particularly close to Earth. If Earth and Mars both had perfectly stable orbits, then each perihelic opposition would bring the two planets as close as they could be. Mars oppositions happen about every 26 months. Every 15 or 17 years, opposition occurs within a few weeks of Mars’ perihelion (the point in its orbit when it is closest to the sun). The next Mars Opposition will occur on March 3, 2012.
