Tigers slip out of enclosure in Guwahati Zoo

Assam News · January 31, 2010

On Saturday morning a tigress and her cub escaped from an enclosure at the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati. The sudden development frightened around 10,000 visitors in the zoo and authorities had to evacuate the zoo. The zoo, largest in the North-East India, was fully packed with visitors on a weekend break. Both the tigers were later tranquilized and taken to their cages.

Assam Zoo Tiger Dibya, the eight-year-old female, prowled around the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden for nearly two hour before she was tranquillised. Luckily, the tigers were not in a mode to attack visitors. In 2007, Dibya mauled a 50-year-old visitor to death, when the man tried to take photographs of the cats.

It is believed that the two Royal Bengal tigers opened the door to the iron enclosures and sneaked out while their keepers were busy in disinfecting the cage. The zoo authorities have ordered an investigation to find out how the big cats managed to get out of the enclosure.
