Indian communist leader Jyoti Basu passes away

Veteran Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader and former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu passed away on Sunday after a long illness. The 95-year-old CPI(M) patriarch died of multiple organ failure at 11.47 am (IST).

Jyoti Basu was admitted to the AMRI hospital, salt lake city, Kolkata on January 1 with mildly severe pneumonia. Then Basu was diagnosed with multi organ dysfunction. Basu had donated his eyes and body and it is reported that his rites will be performed on Tuesday.

Born on July 8, 1914, in Kolkata, Jyoti Basu became chief minister of West Bengal in June 1977 and held the post till November 2000, when he voluntarily resigned on health grounds. Jyoti Basu was a member of the CPI(M) Politburo from the time the party was founded in 1964 till 2008.
