Social Networking lowers productivity in Indian Companies

According to the findings of a new survey by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham), popular social networking sites such as Facebook, Myspace and Linkedin are badly affecting the productivity of Indian companies.

Social Networking The survey found that participating office employees in India spent on average an hour a day on social networking sites like Facebook, which resulted in 12.5% productivity decline. The Assocham survey was based on responses from nearly 4,000 corporate employees between the ages of 21 and 60 in Indian cities of Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, Indore, Ahmedabad, Surat, Mumbai, Pune, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Lucknow and Kanpur.

"Close to 12.5% of productivity of human resource in corporate sector is misappropriated each day since a vast majority of them while away their time accessing social networking sites during the office hours," the BBC News quoted the findings of Assocham’s Social Development Foundation survey.

Interestingly, nearly half of the office employees had accepted that they accessed Facebook during working hours. On the other hand, 40% of the respondents said that their companies give full access to social networking sites. But the survey found that only 19% of Indian companies allow social networking sites for business purposes and limited personal use is allowed by only 16% of the companies. Moreover, 83 per cent of the respondents believe that surfing the web during office hours is no big deal!
