On Friday, a Nigerian man tried to blow up a Delta-Northwest Airlines flight, but was overpowered by passengers and crew and the aircraft landed safely. The 23-year-old passenger from Nigeria ignited an explosive device on the plane as it was preparing to land in Detroit. But the terror attack failed as the attacker was quickly subdued by two passengers.

The Northwest Airlines flight 253 landed safely at Detroit Metropolitan Airport carrying 278 passengers. The Nigerian man was taken into custody with his trousers cut off and his legs burned. Two of the passengers, who jumped over one other to subdue the Nigerian man, also suffered minor injuries.

White House said it believed it was an attempted act of terrorism and U.S. President Barack Obama has instructed to impose, stricter, unspecified, security measure on air travel. According to some media reports, the 23-year-old Nigerian named Abdul Mudallad, admitted that he was acting on al Qaida’s instructions. But official sources said that it is too early to confirm the connection.

Delta Air Lines today issued a statement regarding the incident onboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 bound for Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport from Amsterdam.

"Upon approach to Detroit, a passenger caused a disturbance onboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253. The passenger was subdued immediately and the crew requested that law enforcement meet the flight upon arrival. The flight, operated by Northwest using an Airbus 330-300 aircraft with 278 passengers onboard, landed safely. The passenger was taken into custody and questioned by law enforcement authorities. Delta is cooperating fully with authorities and additional questions should be directed to law enforcement officials who are leading the investigation."
