By Assam News on December 14, 2009 at 12:31 am

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has suffered a broken nose and lost two of his teeth after being attacked by a protester at a political rally in Milan on Sunday. Berlusconi was leaving a rally of his People of Freedom (PdL) party when a man struck him in the face with a souvenir statue of the the Milan Dome.

The attack was caught by television cameras and happened as Mr Berlusconi was on his way back to his car. The 73-year-old prime minister was taken to a hospital with a broken nose, two broken teeth, a cut lip and blood all over his face. He is now recovering and under observation in the hospital.

The attacker was a 42-year-old man called Massimo Tartaglia. Police arrested him immediately and later charged with aggravated assault. Tartaglia is allegedly suffering from serious mental problems. The attack was a serious security breach and it is expected that soon an investigation will be started into how the attacker got so close to the Prime Minister.

This whole incident must have been scary for Berlusconi; at the same time, he should probably feel lucky - it could have been a lot worse
