The attack was caught by television cameras and happened as Mr Berlusconi was on his way back to his car. The 73-year-old prime minister was taken to a hospital with a broken nose, two broken teeth, a cut lip and blood all over his face. He is now recovering and under observation in the hospital.
The attacker was a 42-year-old man called Massimo Tartaglia. Police arrested him immediately and later charged with aggravated assault. Tartaglia is allegedly suffering from serious mental problems. The attack was a serious security breach and it is expected that soon an investigation will be started into how the attacker got so close to the Prime Minister.
