Police, Student injured in JNU violence

By Assam News on November 23, 2009 at 12:11 am

New Delhi, Nov 22 - On Sunday night violence broke out in the campus of the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi when students and police personnel clashed over arrest of four youths for allegedly drinking liquor and passing obscene comments on girls in the campus. To control the situation police used lathi charge and bursting of tear gas shells, in which a few students and police personnel were injured.

According to a senior police officer, the campus security staff found the four consuming liquor inside a car and allegedly teasing some girls. The security staff suspected them to be outsiders and asked them to show their Identity card after which one of the youths brandished a pistol that turned out to be a toy gun, he said.

The police reached the spot and took the four into custody. DCP H G Dhaliwal was also present at the spot. Students in the campus tried to stop the police from taking them and blocked the police vehicle, demanding an apology from the four. The police resorted to lathi charge and lobbed teargas shells. Police has registered a case of molestation and trespassing against the four youths.

How much were you paid for writing the police version of events?
The gun was a real gun, the security guards are trained people not 5 yr olds who cannot tell the difference between a toy gun and a real one. And even if it were a toy gun, why did they show it to the guard? They wanted to play with him?
The molestation was not alleged. It did happen and even the police accepted it.
What was so objectionable in the demand of an apology? For you kind information molestation events have been very frequent in recent months in the campus, not to mention all by outsiders, and police did not do anything.
Police caught the students and teacher including girls students and seriously baton-charged them, many of them are very seriously injured. The teargas shells were fired after the baton-charge, which leaves little doubt to understand the real motives of the police.
The injured students were not given medical care, they were instead taken to the police station while the four guys were mollycoddled by the police. They were given new clothes to change into and time to freshen up. The students, bleeding, were forced to sit in the police station and left only after intervention from another police officer who literally said, “Let him go or he will die here”.
Try to find out who is the father of one of the four accused and if you have a pigeon’s brain, you will find out the truth.
And please if you cannot hear both sides, do not publish. It is an insult to journalism.
