Madhur Bhandarkar to face trial in Rape case
Assam News · November 12, 2009
Mumbai, Nov 11 : A Mumbai court on Wednesday initiated an inquiry against Bollywood director Madhur Bhandarkar on rape charges by Preeti Jain. Rejecting the police contention that allegations against Bhandarkar were false, a magistrate’s court on Wednesday said the FIR filed by model-turned-actress Preeti Jain against him in July 2004 could not be dismissed.
Preeti Jain had filed a first information report (FIR) against Bhandarkar on July 22, 2004. In the complaint under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) she had stated that Bhandarkar repeatedly raped her between 1999 and 2004, promising to make her a famous Bollywood actress and even marry her. But, on May 8, 2007, the Versova police had filed a B-summary report stating that the case against Bhandarkar was false.
Now, after the argument by Jain’s lawyer Sushan Kunjuraman that a rape victim’s statement was enough for putting the accused on a criminal trial, Metropolitan magistrate R K Shaikh has decided to conduct an in-court inquiry.
Madhur Bhandarkar is denying the rape charge and called it a publicity stunt. He was never arrested in the case, as he managed to get an anticipatory bail in July 2004.
