JB Patnaik appointed as new Governor of Assam

Guwahati, Nov 22 – On Saturday, Indian President Pratibha Patil appointed former Orissa Chief Minister, Janaki Ballabh Patnaik (JB Patnaik) as the Governor of Assam. Mr. Patnaik, who is a leader of the Indian National Congress, will replace Syed Sibte Razi on the expiry of his term on December 9.

JB Patnaik (born January 3, 1927) is a leader of the Indian National Congress and a former chief minister of Orissa, in which capacity he served for the longest time on record. After the completion of his early education at Khurda High School, he passed his B.A. degree in Sanskrit from the Utkal University in 1947 and passed his M.A. degree in Political Science from the Banaras Hindu University in 1949. In 1950, JB Patnaik became the President of the Orissa state unit of the youth wing of the Congress.
