Indian Panorama opens at IFFI 2009

Indian Panorama at International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2009 was inaugurated by the Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, Shri Raghu Menon today at INOX-II, Panaji. In all, 44 films will be screened in Indian panorama. Of these, 26 are Feature and 18 Non-Feature Films during the 10-day film festival. The Chairman and Members of Feature and Non-Feature Film jury were felicitated on the occasion. Shri Muzaffar Ali Chairperson of Feature Film Jury introduced other jury members of his team Shri Leslie Carvalho, Shri Raja Mitra and Shri Bobby Bedi. Members of the Non-Feature Film Jury who were present at the inaugural included Ms. Paromita Vohra, Shri Sameer Hanchate, Shri Kapilas Bhuyan.

IFFI 2009 Opening Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman, Shri Muzaffar Ali said that viewing 104 films to arrive at decisions to select the 26 films for the Indian Panorama Feature Film Section on the basis of the theme, structure, treatment and design of the film made for quite an enlightening experience. He said he was happy that the films presented a pan – Indian representation and hoped that the language of moving images would bring about a brotherhood world over and help get over armed conflicts. Shri Muzaffar Ali urged the Secretary (I&B) to facilitate screening of such critically acclaimed films on Doordarshan to not only help ensure a wider audience to these directors but also to make good quality cinema available to larger number of people.

The Konkani film ‘Paltadcho Manis (The man Beyond the Bridge)’ directed by Shri Laxmikant Shetgaonkar was a unanimous decision of the Jury to be the Opening Film for the Indian Panorama Feature Film Section today. The director of the film, Shri Laxmikant Shetgaonkar introduced the cast and crew of his film – Chitranjan Giri, Veena Jamkar, Prasanthi Talpankar, Vasanth Josalkar and Deepak Amonkar were present on the occasion.

The film ‘Dot In for Motion’ opened the Indian Panorama Non-Feature Film Section. ‘Dot in for motion’ traces India’s recent growth after economic liberalization and the information revolution and its effect on the lives of the vast Indian populace. Does globalization really usher in liberty? Does the open market mean a more open society? Does it really foster democracy? Or is it a process of homogenization slowly taking over this nation of enormous diversity? The film neutrally records the voice of people, from lounge of the silicon city to a remote tribal village that never heard of electricity.

Shri Anirban Datta, Director of the film and winner of the National Film Awards 2007 was present on the occasion to introduce his film. Shri Datta hoped that with greater recognition to non-feature film genre, the financing situation for such films would also improve. He added that it is becoming necessary to also recognize new expressions coming in with the digital medium.
