(Assams.Info) - Romanian-born German writer German writer Herta Müller has won the 2009 Nobel Prize in literature. The honor has been awarded to Herta Müller “who with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed”. The announcement of the Nobel Prize in Literature was made by Professor Peter Englund, Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy, on 8 October 2009.

The 56-year-old author came to Germany in 1987. She started her career as a writer after she launched her short stories’ collection, Niederungen, in 1982. This is known as ‘Lowlands’ in English, which was censored by the government.

But the uncensored version, which had been smuggled to Germany, was released in 1984, following which ‘Oppressive Tango’ was released in Romania.

“The Romanian national press was very critical of these works while, outside of Romania, the German press received them very positively,” the Academy said. “Because Mueller had publicly criticized the dictatorship in Romania, she was prohibited from publishing in her own country.”

Even though she has used German for most of her works, there are works like The Passport, The Land of Green Plums, Traveling on One Leg and The Appointment, which have their Spanish, English as well as French translations.

The Nobel prize includes a 10 million kronor ($1.4 million) which Herta Muller will receive on December 10.
