Fresh Flood Hits Thousands in Assam

Assam · July 3, 2009

Nonstop monsoon rains have triggered massive flash floods in many parts of Assam. An estimated 200,000 people were displaced, when flood water inundated more than 300 villages in Dhakhukhana area of Lakhimpur district. The first wave of monsoon flood also washed away some parts of the embankment at Borbil in Majuli, the South Asia’s Biggest River Island.

“Four districts of Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Jorhat and Nagaon were hit by the current wave of flooding that has left about 200,000 people displaced in some 350-odd villages during the past two days,” said Assam Revenue and Rehabilitation Minister Bhumidhar Barman. Most of the displaced people are now lodged at makeshift shelters on raised embankments.

Authorities have sounded a “red alert” for Lakhimpur district where a stretch of 100 meters of the Matmora embankment was washed away by an overflowing Brahmaputra on Wednesday morning. The embankment was under construction. A Malayasian company has been commissioned to build it using such technologies that could withstand the fury of the Brahmaputra during the monsoon season. But, everything went in vein when the first wave of flood washed away the Matmora embankment.

On the other hand, a Central Water Commission bulletin Friday said the main Brahmaputra river and its tributaries were flowing above the danger level in at least eight places and in full spate. It means danger isĀ  still hovering over head. But, where is Assam Government? What they are doing for the flood affected people? Every year flood causes immense loss of life and property in Assam. Why the same scenario repeats every year. When people can donate millions of Rupees for the flood affected people in Bihar, why can’t they offer a helping hand to the needful in Assam? Why?
