Guwahati - Four of a Hindi-speaking family, including an infant, were shot dead in their sleep by heavily-armed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militants in Assam’s Sonitpur District on Tuesday.
According to news reports, soon after midnight, a group of heavily armed militants of the Ranjan Daimary group of NDFB descended on 45-year-old Munna Pal’s house at 1, Nahorani Grant, 35km from Tezpur, and opened fire.
“The group first shot dead Munna who was sleeping on the verandah. Then they broke open the door and sprayed bullets on Munna’s brother, Tunna, 35, Tunna’s wife Saraswati, 30, their 18-month-old son Pankaj and daughter Poonam, 5,” a police official said.
While Tunna, Saraswati and Pankaj died on the spot, Poonam sustained injuries while trying to escape. She is undergoing treatment at a Rangapara hospital and is stated to be out of danger. Pals’ 18-year-old neighbour, Sohani Tanti, who had rushed out of her house on hearing gunshots, was hit by a stray bullet in the leg.
The police have launched a search operation in the area to arrest the culprits. Sources said the attack took place after villagers refused to pay extortion money to the militants on Monday.
