The Yemenia Airbus A310 en route to Moroni, the capital of Comoros, from Yemen’s capital Sanaa crashed off the island nation of Comoros on Tuesday. The cause of the crash is unknown, however news reports say it occurred as the plane was approaching the island.
Officials from Yemenia Air say the plane was carrying 142 passengers and 11 crew members. The majority of the passengers were from the Comoros. Sixty-six French nationals were also onboard and France has sent two military planes and a ship to help with the search. The Comoros is made up of three islands about 300 kilometers northwest of Madagascar, in the Mozambique channel.
The Yemeni Air plane is the second Airbus to crash into the ocean this month. An Air France Airbus A330 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean June 1, killing all 228 people onboard.
