A five-year-old girl from Duliajan is the first victim of deadly Swine Flu virus in Assam. The girl, with her parents, arrived at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata from Australia via Bangkok on Friday, where mandatory medical check-up detected the symptoms of swine flu in the girl. Further tests confirmed the infection and the girl is now being treated in the Beliaghata Infectious Diseases Hospital in Kolkata.
The family of three from Duliajan in upper Assam, landed at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in a Thai Airways flight after spending a vacation in Bangkok. After landing at 12.50 am, they underwent the mandatory medical check-up and fever was detected. The child had a runny nose, pain in the joints and slight breathing trouble. As another seven-year-old girl suffering from swine flu had reached Kolkata from Australia via Bangkok on Tuesday, the doctors at the airport took no risk. "Their symptoms prompted us to quarantine them," said A C De, the medical officer at the airport.
Then, their throat swabs were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, for tests. The results confirmed that the girl is infected with deadly Swine Flu virus. The father of the girl, who is an employee of Oil India Limited (OIL), has tested negative, while the mother’s test report is awaited.
The three members of the family have been kept quarantined in a special ward in the hospital, where another seven-year-old girl – the first confirmed swine flu patient in the state – is also being treated.
