“Ghajini” to be screened with English subtitles

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan’s latest hindi film “Ghajini” will be screened with English subtitles at selected screens of Big Cinemas, a chain of multiplexes, in Mumbai, India. The subtitles will make the film more accessible to hearing impaired and non-Hindi speaking audiences.
Tushar Dhingra, COO-Big Cinemas said, “this will ensure that the cinema medium can be enjoyed more completely by a larger number of public, especially the hearing impaired who cannot understand the dialogues.” He also added that the release of “Ghajini”, being an eagerly awaited Bollywood film, was an ideal way for Big Cinemas to start offering this facility and will set a trend for future releases.
N U Nayak, Deputy Director-Helen Keller Institute for Deaf and Deafblind welcomed the development. “Screening films with subtitles will definitely help hearing impaired persons to understand and enjoy films without misinterpretation,” he added.
“Ghajini” is a remake of its Tamil namesake, Ghajini, which was adapted from critically acclaimed Hollywood psychological thriller Memento, directed by Christopher Nolan. Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and Hindi debutant Asin Thottumkal plays the roles of the lead pair in the film. It is a romantic action thriller that explores the life of a once-rich businessman who suffers from anterograde amnesia following a violent encounter. With the aid of Polaroid images and permanent tattoos on his torso, the businessman single-handedly tries to avenge the murder of his vivacious model girlfriend, Kalpana, who was killed shortly before he was also attacked leading to his diagnosis of amnesia.
The screening of “Ghajini” with subtitles will begin in its second week at digital screens in Big Cinemas, Wadala and Metro Big Cinemas in Mumbai.
