At least 20 dead in Russian Submarine accident

At least 20 people were killed and another 21 injured in a tragic accident during the sea trial of a Russian nuclear submarine. According to a Russian naval spokesman the incident on Saturday occurred due to failure of a fire extinguishing system. There was 208 people on board and the nuclear reactor of the submarine is reported to be intact with normal levels of radiation.
“More than 20 people were killed on a nuclear submarine in the Pacific Ocean during routine testing as a result of the unsanctioned functioning of the fire extinguishing systems,” the navy spokesman, Igor Dygalo, said to Reuters.
If we look at the death toll, this is the worst submarine disaster for Russia since the Kursk sank eight years ago in the Barents Sea, that took lives of 118 sailors onboard the nuclear-powered submarine.
The submarine, whose name and whereabouts have not been disclosed by the navy, has been ordered to suspend all sea trials and return to port in the far eastern Primorye territory.
