Flash Floods in Kamrup and Lakhimpur Districts of Assam
By Assam on October 29, 2008
Once again, flash floods submerged many villages in Assam’s Kamrup and Lakhmipur districts. On Monday night, the Puthimari river flowing through Kamrup district breached its embankment at Hohora and submerged about 11 villages along the highway at Kendukona. Then, the excess water released from the Ranganadi Hydro-electrical power plant of North East Electrical Power Corporation (NEEPCO) in Yazali inside Arunachal Pradesh has caused floods in Lakhmipur district.

Flash Floods in Assam
The breach of embankment at Hohora damaged standing paddy crop ready for harvest in the area. The last time the embankment of the Puthimari was breached by flood waters was on August 31. Official sources attributed the flash floods to heavy rains in Bhutan in the past few days. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Civil Defence teams rescued the marooned people.
On the other hand, the excess water released by NEEPCO reached North Lakhimpur around 9 pm on Monday. The water entered North Lakhimpur through the breached portion of the Ranganadi river at the Ujani Mirigaon and inundated a vast area of Bagalijaan, Bowalguri, Jorhatiyagaon, Hatiloong, Highjaan, Bantow, Rownapur, Ghilaguri and Rangchali.
Here, we must not forget that flood from the same dam of NEEPCO caused havoc in North Lakhimpur on 14th June which had breached the N.H-52 at Ganesh Uddyan and deluged a wide area taking the lives of more than ten persons. Since then occasional release of water by NEEPCO from its dam at Yazali has been causing recurring floods in these areas of the town.
So, why there is no action against NEEPCO? How long they will play with the lives of Assamese people? We are sure that people of Assam will soon take action against NEEPCO. They must not forget that still they need to cross Assam in order to go outside of Arunachal Pradesh!
