Natalie Portman debuts as a Director in Venice
By Assam on September 2, 2008
Israeli-American actress Natalie Portman, 27, debuted as a director at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday, with the screening of her short movie named “Eve”. The short film is about a young woman who is dragged along to her grandmother’s romantic date.
Natalie Portman’s short film “Eve” stars veteran Hollywood stars, Lauren Bacall and Ben Gazzara as the witty grandmother and the widower who takes her out for dinner. Portman, said she had always had a fascination with the older generation, and drew inspiration for Bacall’s character from her own grandmother.
Portman began her career in the early 1990s, turning down the opportunity to become a child model in favor of acting. Her first film role came in the 1994 independent film Léon. She became well known when she was cast as Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Portman also completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Harvard College, while she was working on the Star Wars films.
Portman said that she had long wanted to be on the other side of the camera and will present a second short work at the Toronto film festival, which will start later this week.
