NASA wants to use Space Shuttle beyond 2010?

U.S. space agency NASA will look at the possibility to continue the current space shuttle programme until 2015, when it’s replacement, Ares-Orion, will be launched. Florida newspaper the Orlando Sentinel revealed this on Friday, after they obtained a leaked internal NASA e-mail. Presently, the space shuttle programme is scheduled for retirement in 2010.

According to the newspaper, NASA wants to carry out a study to find if the space shuttle would be able to provide service beyond 2010. According to the internal email, NASA chief Michael Griffin ordered the shuttle-related study. Griffin has repeatedly raised the issue of how much it would cost to keep the shuttle flying. Last year, he estimated it could cost $4 billion each year after 2010.
“We want to focus on helping bridge the gap of U.S. vehicles traveling to the ISS (International Space Station) as efficiently as possible,” wrote John Coggeshall, manager of manifest and schedules at Johnson Space Center in Houston, in the e-mail sent Wednesday.
NASA acknowledged the authenticity of the leaked email. But, the space agency said that the plan to start a study is still in a premature stage.
